Whistler Blackcomb Uniforms
Custom uniforms express intimate knowledge of a profession. Respect for the expertise, conditions and dedication involved in the work are channeled into tailoring that makes an item as efficient and responsive as possible. Working directly with designers allows for the exchange of ideas and experience to benefit the end design.
When Whistler Blackcomb approached Arc'teryx to work with them on Ski Patrol uniforms, it was a meeting of like minds. The three season uniforms are a team effort between the mountain staff and Arc'teryx designers Tanya Hall and Tom Fayle, specialists in our Alpine category.
Arc'teryx has an existing Patrol Jacket. For Whistler Blackcomb, Tanya and Tom developed modifications specific to the needs of that ski patrol staff. Collaboration between the two teams led to a customized radio pocket, an internal mesh dump pocket sized to fit goggles and a note pad and on the lower sleeve, a laminated pocket to store bomb wicks.
Off-area skiing and avalanche control often requires Whistler Blackcomb patrollers to work with helicopters and deep snow. In addition to the large reflective crosses that identify patrollers to the public, underarm blazes were added to aid visibility for helicopter pilots. Extra width on the pant belt loops accommodates the Arc'teryx Rigger's Belt, part of our Rigger's Harness and an important piece of emergency safety equipment. Thigh pockets have enough volume to fit gloves and any equipment for rapid, secure storage while thigh vents open to regulate heat but keep snow out.
As part of an integrated layering system, the uniforms work in combination with staff Atom LT Jackets. Including the layering idea into the custom pieces ensures maximum performance in all conditions.
Custom uniforms are a portrait of knowledge, dedication and integrity. They reflect the relationship between a corporation and its industry and are an important part of public image. Working closely with designers to create unique features is an opportunity to acknowledge the professionalism of staff and the integrity of their experience.
Collaboration is an opportunity to learn as well as an opportunity for new ideas to surface. The Whistler Blackcomb uniforms have been a rewarding experience.
