Jorge Ackermann

Biography

I was born in Bariloche, a mountain town in Northern Patagonia. I spent my teens climbing and skiing around Refugio Frey where I met the people that inspired me to climb big mountains. Eventually after hearing so many stories about the Fitz Roy and the Cerro Torre, I decided to go see for myself what the hype was all about.

With 500 pesos in my pockets and hand-me down climbing gear, I headed south, across the Estepa to El Chalten. Once I got there, I learnt the hard way to climb in the Patagonian style; fast, light, and always on the lookout for Patagonia´s infamous weather. Every year I go back to El Chalten drawn by the magic of its granite towers. But no matter where I am climbing, being on a big wall with friends, drinking mate, and discussing where to go next is what keeps me climbing. Opening routes, roping up, and getting started on a face where the outcomes are uncertain is what climbing is all about for me. In a world of information overload, I really enjoy climbing into the unknown. The last few years have been quite the whirlwind for me, I moved to Canada and despite being distracted by the amazing skiing to be had here, I managed to do a bunch of trips to Patagonia and open some fantastic routes; most notably, Historia sin Fin on the West face of Fitz Roy and Un Mar de Sueños on the impressive East face. Since I arrived in Canada, I was able to travel around the country a lot. Going from climbing on the Chief to ice climbing in Val-David, Quebec, discovering the Bugaboos (which remind me so much of home) and skiing from sea to sky on Mt Currie in Pemberton. I am really grateful to live the life I live. Being able to travel, climb, ski, meet inspired and inspire people, sharing adventures and all this on the weekends (hey, a guy needs to pay the bills).

Some of the routes I opened;

Los Illegals (2009). Salinas, Brazil
Historia sin Fin (2010). West face of Fitz Roy, Patagonia
Clinica de Aventura (2010). North face of Fitz Roy, Patagonia
El Caracol (2011). Aguja Standhart, Patagonia
Mt Olivia (2012). Ushuaia
Un Mar de Sueños (2012). East Face of Fitz Roy, Patagonia

Some of my favorites;

West face of Cerro Torre, Cerro Torre, Patagonia
Care Bear Traverse, Chalten Massif, Patagonia
Cerro Cuernos, Aconcagua
Flake of Wrath, Cochamo, Chile
Northern Lights, Squamish
