Manager, Materials R&D – North Vancouver

We are seeking a creative, friendly and experienced individual who can hit the ground running with minimum instruction. Not only will you have a strong understanding of the technical design application of outdoor equipment and clothing, ideally you will also be someone who is active in the outdoors and is comfortable working in a casual, unstructured work environment.

As part of the R&D team, you will drive innovation in current and new high performance textile and materials R&D, while keeping cost sensitivity and environmental responsibility in mind. Working with other teams, you will provide input into improving the application and performance of technology in textile markets such as snow sports, athletic, casual and urban wear, and other industries such as military and law enforcement.

The ideal candidate will have:

• 10+ years of combined experience and education
• An existing contact base of progressive fiber, yarn and material producers and manufacturers
• A broad technical knowledge of material development processes and equipment, from fiber development to end use
• An ability to communicate with vendors in technical terms
• Knowledge of a variety of outdoor activities
• Proven management ability
• Impeccable organizational and problem solving skills
• Effective interpersonal skills Experience in a Global manufacturing environment would also be an asset.

Some key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Researching and developing new materials and manufacturing technologies for domestic and international sourcing base
• Evaluating current materials usage, and identifying areas in need of expansion; including coordinating the integration of newly sourced and developed materials
• Advising management on recommended changes, improvements and textile trends to maintain a cutting edge in the outdoor industry
• Interpreting fabric and materials needs during the design concept and development phase
• Managing Materials Library and Testing staff
• Coordinating the colour and greige process from fiber concept to roll or sheet goods manufacturing
• Providing direction to junior level designers with product relevant materials information
• Researching and advising on non-traditional materials used in other industries (i.e. automotive, military, medical). Including, NIR compliant and fire-retardant textiles.
• Working closely with the Design, Sales and Marketing Departments to educate teams on new material developments
• Monitoring the material life-cycle, from lab testing to end use product testing
• Training employees on new testing equipment
• Setting procedural and process expectations, and monitoring compliance
